Are you a hammock person?  You know, a hammock- two trees, some rope, some material and lots of falling down? I actually bought one of those hammock metal stand contraptions you get at Home Depot a few years ago and it sits lonely in my backyard most of the year.

But when the weather is nice outside (and hasn’t it been just perfect lately?) I like to go outside right before sunset and look straight up at the sky as it gradually fades from a pale blue to a dusty black and I strain to see the first few stars eagerly show up for their nightly appointment.

My original cotton rope hammock worn through one summer afternoon after an especially tiring  day holding an aunt and 3 nieces at the same time. I bought  an authentic Brazilian weave hammock last year from eBay that’s really not nearly as comfortable as it should be and tilts at an odd angle depending on which side you attempt to mount it on.

There’s just something about being outside swaying back and forth as your dogs show genuine contentment that you’re out in the back yard with them and the temperature is warm enough that you don’t need a long sleeve shirt but you can still feel that chill starting to creep in and you can hear the echo of  kids’ laughter as they race past your run-down outside fence and  you can smell a neighbor’s grill and wonder if you should start making friends with your neighbors seeing that they can afford to eat steak on a Wednesday night.

It’s not summer. It’s almost summer. It’s soon summer.  It’s the promise of summer.

And it’s one of my simple pleasures.
